PICTURE RELEASE THERAPY (PRT)

When your traumatised clients get stuck, do you get stuck too?
When a traumatised client gets stuck they may
When the therapist gets stuck they may
Picture Release Therapy (PRT) is a highly effective method
specifically designed to resolve these challenging issues
PICTURE RELEASE THERAPY (PRT)
When a client's psychological wounding has been so severe, chronic or entrenched, or is so far back in the past, it can be incredibly difficult to help them get to the roots of their issues.
This can be challenging for both the client and the therapist.
For a client with unresolved complex trauma, getting 'stuck' during therapy can lead to extreme feelings of fear, shame, hopelessness and despair, resulting in overwhelm, disconnection and shut down.
It can rapidly exacerbate existing negative views of themselves and their future, often driving them to seek respite through increased levels of familiar harmful or self limiting behaviours, or cause them to give up completely.
For some therapists, the desire to help clients overcome this natural 'resistance' may cause them to push harder, risking retraumatising their client in the process.
The challenges many therapists face helping traumatised and retraumatised clients navigate their way through these blocks can greatly affect their confidence in their own abilites. For some, and particularly for new practitioners, this can be enough for them to abandon the business of therapy altogether.
This regrettable loss of hope, self esteem, financial and personal investment for clients and therapists can be avoided.
The iHOW Method® is dedicated to helping chronically traumatised individuals, and the professionals who support them, learn effective and easy to use tools to facilitate and aid their recovery and growth.
One of the most gentle yet powerful methods available is
Picture Release Therapy. (PRT)
What is Picture Release Therapy (PRT)
and how does it work?
Picture Release Therapy is a psychological therapy specifically designed to safely access information related to the most difficult to reach traumatic events in order to bring relief from suffering and effect lasting positive change.
It combines the principles of art therapy and Emotional Freedom Technique in conjunction with trauma informed counselling, psychotherapy and coaching techniques.
Using a variety of materials, the client creates a series of 'drawings', which they explore while using psychotherapy strategies and Emotional Freedom Technique protocols.
As they move through the process, key information and connections effortlessly emerge and coalesce, enabling awareness and understanding to take place, whilst allowing emotions to be easily released and solutions to come forth.
This is not a traditional regression technique where the purpose is to uncover or recover traumatic memories, which may or may not be reliable.
Instead, PRT harnesses the naturally self protective mechanisms of the brain to bring forth any and all relevant and associated information that the client needs to become 'unstuck' without having to relive the trauma.
The sophisticated way in which it does this is, is by making meaningful connections between the seemingly random and abstract personal symbolism of the marks they have made on the page, the way in which they verbally descibe those marks and any thoughts, feelings or insights that arise as they do so, whilst connecting what is happening in their body at the same time.
The brain's natural ability to use hidden but meaningful symbolism and representations which are unique to that individual, and which the therapist doesn't need to know or understand, allows for multiple layers of inner knowledge to be quickly recognised, connected and comfortably processed.
A key role of the therapist using PRT is to carefully and sensitively support the client as they assimilate and process what is unfolding.
Using an experiential approach, this training teaches therapists how to expertly question and guide the client through the process of safely discovering, acknowledging, expressing, challenging, releasing and replacing any hidden self limiting or harmful thoughts, feelings or beliefs which may have been imprinted, suppressed or repressed as a result of trauma.
Anything which the client feels or believes remains trapped within any aspect of their being, including within their body, can be naturally released as part of the physical 'tapping' process.
As the client releases any blocks associated with their trauma they can then use PRT to further explore the resolutions they have reached and the freedom of choice this brings.
By combining PRT with a variety of coaching and counselling techniques, the client is not only able to uncover, or rediscover their unrealised hopes and desires, but to create a practical, tailor made plan of action to help bring them to fruition.
Having acquired a valuable self help tool, clients now have the means to gain clarity on future goals, as well as a way in which to comfortably manage any issues that may arise as they work towards them.
PICTURE RELEASE THERAPY (PRT)
PRT - A Unique Trauma Release Therapy, For When Words Are Not Enough
Who is PRT suitable for?
Due to its benign nature, Picture Release Therapy is suitable for anyone.
It is particularly suited to those who are unable, for whatever reason, to recall, access or verbalise their trauma and the associated feelings.
This may be as a result of the trauma occuring at a preverbal stage of a client's life, when they didn't have the language to express what they experienced.
It may be because what has been experienced is so complicated in nature, with many varying elements covering an extended period of time, that the client simply can't put it all into words and wouldn't know where to start even if they could.
It may be that the profoundly life changing impact a trauma has had on someone is, to them, indescribable.
Terror, freeze state, overwhelm.
As such, Picture Release Therapy is an invaluable therapeutic tool for protracted Post Traumatic Stress disorder and C-PTSD, where there may have been multiple global and personal events which were extremely shocking, taboo, shameful, or complex.
Whether it is because of extreme fear, lack of trust, lack of commitment, loss of hope, or repeated 'failed' attempts at sustained recovery, PRT has the ability to help clients in situations where nothing else has worked.

About The CPD Course
This is a personalised, 1 to 1, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Course in Complex Trauma Therapy, using Picture Release Therapy (PRT).
It is designed for qualified practitioners who are seeking safe, effective methods of helping traumatised clients who, despite everyone's best efforts, have become 'stuck'.
This is an experiential training where, in addition to learning the theory of PRT, the methods can be applied to any issue of the practitioner's choosing, which may be keeping them stuck, either personally or professionally.
Alternatively, if a participant prefers, they can opt to apply the practical skills of the training to their client work.
Why Individual Training?
Have you ever been 'triggered' on a group training course?
Did someone or something bring to the surface a personal issue of yours, or open up an old wound?
Was the privacy, understanding or personal support you needed lacking? Or not available when you needed it most?
Did it cause you to shut down, overshare or even drop out?
When taking part in any kind of therapy training, being 'triggered' is often accepted as par for the course.
Even when supervised, peer to peer practice sessions and demonstrations, either as an observer or a volunteer, can have a detrimental effect on some students.
The concept of the 'wounded healer' is widely recognised within the helping professions. In terms of trauma, it is often those who have had the most painful personal experiences in this area who are most drawn to help others who are still suffering.
It is important then that those professionals who are Inspired by their own personal traumas to help Heal Old Wounds in others are appropriately protected and fully supported in a safe, sensitive, trauma informed learning environment.
This is what the iHOW Method® provides.
