When your traumatised clients get stuck, do you get stuck too?

When a traumatised client gets stuck they may

Lose faith in the therapist

Lose faith in therapy

Lose faith in themselves

Give up

When their therapist gets stuck they may

Lose confidence in their skills

Lose their client

Lose faith in themselves

Give up

When a client's psychological wounding has been so severe, chronic or entrenched, or is so far back in the past, it can be incredibly difficult to help them get to the roots of their issues.

This can be challenging for both the client and the therapist.

For a client with unresolved trauma, getting 'stuck' during therapy can lead to extreme feelings of fear, shame, hopelessness and despair, resulting in overwhelm, disconnection and shut down.

It can rapidly exacerbate existing negative views of themselves and their future, often driving them to seek respite through increased levels of familiar harmful or self limiting behaviours, or cause them to give up completely.

For some therapists, the desire to help clients overcome this natural 'resistance' may cause them to push harder, risking retraumatising their client in the process.

The challenges many therapists face helping traumatised and retraumatised clients navigate their way through these blocks can greatly affect their confidence in their own abilites. For some, and particularly for new practitioners, this can be enough for them to abandon the business of therapy altogether.

This regrettable loss of hope, self esteem, financial and personal investment for clients and therapists can be avoided.

Picture Release Therapy (PRT) is a highly effective method designed to resolve these issues

What is Picture Release Therapy (PRT) and how does it work?

background-2709658_1280

Picture Release Therapy is a psychological therapy specifically designed to safely access information related to the most difficult to reach traumatic events in order to bring relief from suffering and effect lasting positive change.

It combines the principles of art therapy and Emotional Freedom Technique in conjunction with trauma informed counselling, psychotherapy and coaching techniques.

Using a variety of materials, the client creates a series of 'drawings', which they explore while using psychotherapy strategies and Emotional Freedom Technique protocols.

As they move through the process, key information and connections effortlessly emerge, enabling awareness and understanding to take place, whilst allowing emotions to be easily released and solutions to come forth.

The role of the therapist using PRT is to expertly question and guide the client through the process of safely discovering, acknowledging, expressing, challenging, releasing and replacing any hidden self limiting or harmful thoughts, feelings or beliefs which have been imprinted, suppressed or repressed as a result of trauma.

As the client releases the blocks associated with their trauma they use PRT to further explore the resolutions they have reached and the freedom of choice this brings.

By combining PRT with a variety of coaching and counselling techniques, the client is not only able to uncover, or rediscover their unrealised hopes and desires, but to create a practical, tailor made plan of action to help bring them to fruition.

Having acquired a valuable self help tool, clients now have the means to gain clarity on future goals, as well as a way in which to comfortably manage any issues that may arise as they work towards them.

Who is PRT suitable for?

Due to its benign nature, Picture Release Therapy is suitable for anyone.

It is particularly suited to those who are unable, for whatever reason, to recall, access or verbalise their trauma and the associated feelings.

This may be as a result of the trauma occuring at a preverbal stage of a client's life, when they didn't have the language to express what they experienced.

It may be because what has been experienced is so complicated in nature, with many varying elements covering an extended period of time, that the client simply can't put it all into words and wouldn't know where to start even if they could.

It may be that the profoundly life changing impact a trauma has had on someone is, to them, indescribable.

As such, Picture Release Therapy is an invaluable therapeutic tool for protracted Post Traumatic Stress disorder and C-PTSD, where there may have been multiple global and personal events which were extremely shocking, taboo, shameful, or complex.

Whether it is because of extreme fear, lack of trust, lack of commitment, loss of hope, or repeated 'failed' attempts at sustained recovery, PRT has the ability to help clients in situations where nothing else has worked.

PICTURE RELEASE THERAPY (PRT)

Creates an easy natural flow of helpful information between the mind, body and spirit

Works on multiple complex aspects simultaneously

Connects and links the past, present and future

Optimises the client's self policing, self protective mechanisms

Avoids the limitations of words as expression as used in traditional talk therapies

Provides the client with added safety, privacy and autonomy

Have you ever been 'triggered' on a group training course?

Did someone or something bring to the surface a personal issue of yours, or open up an old wound?

Was the understanding and personal support you needed lacking? Or not available when you needed it most?

Did it cause you to shut down, overshare or even drop out?

When taking part in any kind of therapy training, being 'triggered' is usually accepted as par for the course.

Even when supervised, peer to peer practice sessions and demonstrations, either as an observer or a volunteer, can have a detrimental effect on some students.

The concept of the 'wounded healer' is widely recognised within the helping professions. In terms of trauma therapy, it is often those who have had personal experience in this area who are most drawn to help others who are still suffering.
